AdvoCare International LP and the family of company founder Charlie Ragus have endowed the new AdvoCare Foundation with $1.5 million and distributed its first grants July 15.
“We started the foundation to strengthen our 23-year legacy of giving back and focus our efforts on the next generation of champions,” said company executive vice president Allison Levy, who is also president of the charity. “We are excited to fund eight wonderful organizations that provide increased access to safe and healthy programs for children in their local communities.”
Charlie and Peggy Ragus’ daughters,Stacy Cernicky, Jenni McGaha and Debbie Cook,serve on the board.
The first round of beneficiaries included America Scores Dallas and YMCA Metropolitan Dallas, which each received $20,000.
“America Scores Dallas brings a quality after-school program, through soccer, poetry and community service, to underprivileged kids from urban Dallas,” said executive director Crystal Schober. “Thanks to the generosity and commitment of the AdvoCare Foundation, we are able to start a new pilot program at Life School Oak Cliff this year.”
The foundation also gave $20,000 checks to Boys and Girls Club of Metro Atlanta, Vetri Community Partnership in Philadelphia, LA’s Best and Kids in Sports LA. Create Your Dreams in Atlanta and Team Up Philly! each got $15,000.
AdvoCare Foundation intends to announce its 2017 grant application process on or before Oct. 1, a spokeswoman said.
Advocare International is a nutritional supplements company based in Plano that sells products directly through representatives nationwide.
Celebration of Reading
Civic and business leaders Allie Beth and Pierce Allman have been named chairs of the 15th annual Celebration of Reading in Dallas-Fort Worth on Oct. 24 at the Meyerson Symphony Center.
Organized by the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy, the fundraiser will feature best-selling authors Drew Daywalt, C.J. Box, Debbie Macomber and Robert Edsel reading from their most recent works. A festive dinner will follow in the lobby.
Proceeds support the foundation’s literacy programs in North Texas. Teen Trendsetters, for instance, pairs high school or middle school mentors with young students who are struggling with reading.
