SkyWest Leader and Nu Skin Enterprises to be Awarded at Economic Summit
The Utah Economic Summit recognizes one individual and one company every year
SALT LAKE CITY, UT— More than 1,000 business leaders from around the state will gather at the 10th Annual Utah Economic Summit, April 15, 2016. Two outstanding contributors will be recognized at the event. The Utah Economic Summit partners are pleased to announce that Jerry Atkin, chairman of SkyWest, will receive a Lifetime Achievement Award, and Nu Skin Enterprises will receive an Outstanding Company Award.
“I commend Mr. Atkin and Nu Skin for their significant contributions to enhance the lives of Utahns,” Gov. Gary R. Herbert said. “There are many individuals and businesses statewide that demonstrate true excellence, not only for the economy, but in their communities as well. These individuals and businesses are a critical part of Utah’s success.”
Atkin served as CEO of SkyWest, Inc. from 1975 through 2015, making him the longest-tenured CEO in aviation history. During that time, Atkin led SkyWest from 256 passengers and less than $1 million in revenue to more than 60 million passengers and $3 billion in revenue. The entity’s airlines, SkyWest and ExpressJet, form the largest regional airline alliance in the world and partner with major airline players Delta Air Lines, American Airlines, United Airlines and Alaska Airlines.
SkyWest’s remarkable stability and growth have been a major boon to Utah’s economy. SkyWest Airlines operates more daily flights out of Salt Lake City than any other airline, connecting Utahns to the world and the world to Utah. And even with a route network providing more than 3,300 departures every day to hundreds of destinations throughout North America, SkyWest has maintained its headquarters in St. George and runs its largest training and maintenance operations in Salt Lake City. Of the company’s nearly 20,000 employees, more than 2,500 call Utah home.
“I’m humbled and honored to receive the Governor’s Award,” Atkin said. “SkyWest’s success and contributions go far beyond any one individual, and I’ve been fortunate to work with the greatest people in the industry. Our mission was built to reflect our people: the kind of people that build a company to succeed through multiple environments and models. We set out to do something a little better and a little different than everyone else, and through a commitment to that goal, SkyWest and its people continue to succeed.”
Founded in Provo in 1984, Nu Skin Enterprises is no stranger to the global economy. Over the years, the direct selling company has expanded to offer more than 200 products in 54 markets worldwide. Nu Skin’s success brings in more than $2 billion in yearly revenue, and it is well-known for giving back to the community. Through the Nu Skin Force For Good Foundation and its charitable partners, tens of thousands of underprivileged children worldwide receive hope for a life free of disease, illiteracy and poverty.
In addition, the company’s sales leaders, customers and employees have purchased and donated more than 450 million meals through the Nourish the Children® initiative since 2002.
“We are honored to receive this recognition from Governor Herbert and are proud to have called Utah home for more than 30 years,” said Truman Hunt, Nu Skin president and CEO. “While Nu Skin has grown to be an international enterprise operating in 54 markets, our roots are firmly planted in the Utah business community. This area is home to a talented and highly educated workforce that understands the global complexities of business and is at the forefront of scientific and digital innovation.”
Both Atkin and Nu Skin company representatives will receive their awards from Gov. Herbert during the summit luncheon.
“Economic movers and shakers like these truly deserve this recognition,” said Val Hale, executive director of the Governor’s Office of Economic Development, a prime sponsor of the Utah Economic Summit. “Each has made innovative contributions to their industry and their local economies. But the way they give back is especially noteworthy. They set an excellent example for other leaders throughout the state, and we’re looking forward to highlighting that as part of our summit.”
The 10th Annual Utah Economic Summit will be hosted by Gov. Gary R. Herbert and presented by Zions Bank and the Governor’s Office of Economic Development. This year’s theme, Innovate Utah! will celebrate and advance innovation across every Utah industry. Business and community leaders, as well as government officials, students, and educators are all encouraged to attend. The event will be held April 15 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Grand America Hotel in Salt Lake City.
