Longaberger leaving ‘Big Basket’

NEWARK, Ohio (WCMH)–Employees are moving out of one of the most iconic buildings in central Ohio–the Longaberger Basket Company headquarters.

The giant basket-shaped building is on Main Street in Newark.

In a memo to employees, chairman John Rochon Jr. announced that employees who work in the Newark building will move to Frazeysburg.

The company still owns the “Big Basket,” as he calls it. It was built in 1996. Columbus Business First reports that the basket building is seven stories tall and 180,000 feet square.

“The real estate firm brought us multiple offers for the Big Basket,” he wrote. “Until now, I’ve rejected each one. The local tax basis is almost a $9 million valuation, while the offers for the building have been in the hundreds of thousands. We have to have a fair and rational solution to that.”

The company’s basket weavers and distributors work in Frazeysburg. Customers can tour the factory and buy Longaberger merchandise there, as well.

Russ Mack, executive vice president of parent company CVSL, said in an email to NBC4 that employees have all wanted to be on the same campus for “a long time.”
